Fantasy Game

Introduction

The plan was simple enough, or at least should have been. Back in your homeland, you and your friends had a great idea to make enough money for you to live like royalty (in terms of wealth, at least- putting on a posh accent and wearing silly clothes would be entirely up to you). Hearing of vast fortunes to be made in the exotic Westlands you took the decision to pool all your resources into one great expedition. Your cargo of herbs and spices were commonplace back home, but in the Westlands they would sell for a vast fortune. At least they would have done had they got there. Three days into your voyage, you were sailing around the north of the continent of Meir with the weather conditions against you. The treacherous coast and stormy weather made life difficult enough but things became even worse when a sleek vessel with a shark’s head flag was spotted moving stealthily through the volatile waves and heading straight for you.
The poor conditions didn’t seem to affect the pirates at all as they boarded your ship. The next day passed in a daze. Your cargo was stolen as you and your friends were captured and, later, forcefully marched across a strange country consisting of overgrown fields and woodland. It was when you got to a thick forest that you decided to make your move. Without warning, you ran from your captors. Arrows were fired in your direction but plunged harmlessly into trees. Without turning back, you fled further and further into the woods, ignoring assaults from thorns and nettles and your own total exhaustion. After an unknown length of time you spotted a hut and, with the last ounce of your strength, you enter the empty building and collapse into a bed. Gradually awakening, you now become aware of birdsong, and filtered morning light drifting in through empty windows. You’re alive, but are your friends? You know your aim has to be to rescue your comrades, recover your cargo and escape from this land. But why am I telling you this? You know it already…

You’re in a sparse hut with no furnishings other than a modest bed and a cauldron. It is a bright day outside and the outside forest looks far more inviting than it was when you were fleeing from the murderous pirates. Looking around, you see a trapdoor beneath the bed.

Tricky. Just how does one engage in conversation with a rabbit? It very rarely comes up as an issue. Nonetheless, you make an effort.

“Yes. So. Can. You.” you feel the rabbit is mocking you slightly.
“Oh, sorry. Erm, do you have a name?”
“No. If it makes it easier you can call me Mr Rabbit.”
“Great, I think I can remember that. Now, what would you like to discuss? I’m very wise, as far as rabbits go.”

Yuck! What a mess. Blood and innards everywhere. You recognise one of the men as a pirate you’ve met before. The other is a stranger to you. You think the pirates might have sent one guy out to look for you and he might have run into the hut’s owner. Looks like they died fighting each other. To try and stop thinking about whether there are more pirates around, you check the bodies. You take the best of the two swords and 20 Gold. You graverobber, you.

You’re perfectly aware that most woodland is just mile after mile of plantlife with no special features, people to talk to, curiously discarded valuables etc. but you still feel that there should be something here. Oh well, see if you reach anywhere more exciting next time.

Having never used a sword before, why you think you can beat a professional guard with one is completely beyond me but, it’s your life. Or was. You die. The guards fatally hacks you with a single stroke and goes back to being bored.

As you continue your quest through the woods you hear raucous shouting and the clanging of metal on metal. To the south and west of you, huts and trees are on fire. You keep perfectly still as you realise you’ve entered a battleground and you can see soldiers fighting against bandits. They don’t appear to be the pirates that captured you, though. To risk entering the thick of it, go the south or the west. To back away, head north or east.

Ignoring all warnings, you proceed. As you walk deeper into the forest, you become aware that you aren’t alone. Nothing obvious, just the odd snapping of a branch or hushed whisper. Scared, you stop completely. After a short time, you make out three faces. The figures look tough; dressed in animal skins and armed with spiked clubs. Do you;

“No.” Despite the guard’s limited conversation abilities, you continue,
“Are the bandits really that much trouble?”
“Yes. But we’re worried about spies as well. We’ve got the army south of here because we’re worried about an invasion so we want to make sure no one can enter town and find out our military secrets.”
“You mean like where the army is?”
“Yes. Oh, bugger. Just pretend you didn’t hear me.” The guard sighs “It’s so boring guarding this road all day. You haven’t got anything to keep me entertained have you?”

“Hi, my name’s…”

“Where is he?” but the soldiers aren’t paying you any attention.

The forest is now very thick and little light penetrates through the trees. You immediately put yourself on your guard as you see a figure coming towards you. An eldritch screech assaults your ears as you make out the figure of a twisted old woman,
“Witches! Bandits! They’re ALL witches and bandits. And they’re here!” The woman grabs you by your shoulders. “Witches to the north of me, bandits to my west, here I am, stuck in the middle with…wait…” the woman starts looking confused giving you a chance to break free.

You are entering a frantic army camp. Although you don’t feel in imminent danger, a fierce battle is being fought in the west and you’ve wandered into a hive of activity. The only person who remains calm is a ginger-haired officer who regards you with curiosity. The south is desolate grassland while the west is surely too dangerous to go to.

You enter the small, cosy cottage. There is still no sign of anybody home. The cottage is a total mess, various cut up plants and liquids cover a table and the floor. A cauldron containing an alcoholic smelling liquid sits in the middle, while a note is pinned to the wall.

History will record this as the most one-sided battle ever. Armed valiantly with nothing, you take on the whole Northern Meir army. Well, one of them anyway. That’s all it needed. You die.

You’re in the far north east of the continent. To your east is an ocean that stretches north past impenetrable mountains. As you gaze over the sea, you think you spot a pirate ship. Examining further, you find and take from a patch of mysterious yellow herbs.

“Haaaaaaiiiiiii!” You scream as you charge with the intention of inflicting your unique kung fu stylings on the guard. They are very unique indeed, as you trip over at the last second, and the guard nonchalantly chops your head off. You die. Although you probably guessed that.

“I can’t really talk, you’re just hallucinating.”
“Really?”
“Of course not! I think it’s the herbs. I ate some of the weird yellow ones once, and since then I could talk human. Not that it’s much use- people just say “Oh, that’s fascinating.” while secretly plotting to sell me to a travelling fair.”
“Do you know much about herbs?”
“Not really, you want the witches to the north. They know a lot about that stuff.”

“A couple of things, I’m afraid,” he replies in a posh accent, “For one, we have intelligence that Southern Meir are planning to attack through this stretch. Of course, we have to keep the army here because of that and that infuriates the bandits to the west. We expect them to give up their attack before too long.”

Hmm, I don’t know if this has been stressed enough before, but you’re not really the world’s best swordsman. The bandits aren’t really the world’s best with spiky clubs either, although that’s less of an artform and more a case of splitting open someone’s head as quickly as possible. In this case yours. You die.

The end of the line. No longer can you head west or east, but an impenetrable mountain base lies to the north. Certainly a dramatic landscape, the evening has begun to descend and the wind picks up pace and howls through the valley. You investigate further to find three  women wearing black and sitting round a cauldron. There is no fire and you notice the area surrounded by unlit candles. The women regard you and say “Hail.” in unison causing a sharp smell of alcohol to waft your way.
“Hail.” You reply, “can I help you with anything?”
The oldest looking woman stands, up, falls over, stands up again and almost bursts into tears.
“We’re having a Sabbath. Or, at least, we should be.” she said, looking coldly at one of her friends, “only someone forgot the flame spell she said she’d prepared, and now we’ve got a fire that won’t light and hundreds of unlit candles. It’s appalling, you trudge all the way to the foot of the mountain and then find you’ve only got some of Martha’s homemade ginger beer to look forward to. Not that I’m not enjoying it *hic* Can you help us?”

Despite a severe urge to sneeze, and your whole body deciding to start itching at once, you manage to keep your cover ’til the bandits move to the west. Now you can look around, you find the north impossible to reach due to a steep hill. You also find, and take a clump of black herbs despite wondering if it’s worth pushing your luck anymore?

North of the hut you slept in, you find…another hut (how original). Closer inspection reveals it to be a small cottage with a thatched roof, nestled amongst the trees. Peeking in through the window, you see no sign of anyone. To the far east you think you can see the ocean while, to the north, the landscape turns mountainous, making progress impossible.

The forest opens up slightly which makes you feel exposed and even less safe than before. With good reason too. Not only are the three bandits you met earlier watching you, but they have mates here. As soon as you’re aware that you’re surrounded, the bandits move in for the kill. You die.

Your greatest fight to date! Amongst the confusion, you take out your sword and plunge it through an unsuspecting soldier. It’s a pity about the other several dozen surrounding you, however. You die.

Against your better judgement you talk to the eccentric woman.
“So witches, that’s interesting?”
“Wiiiiitchesssss!”
“Yes, you already mentioned that.”
“They think they’re better than everyone because they can make spells and potions, but I have a pet rabbit. It talks to me! I’d like to see them do that!”
“That’s nice for you, you couldn’t help me out, could you?”
“Witches! Bandits!”
You decide this is hopeless.

You enter the simple building to find it empty. Having waited a moment to make sure no-one’s following you, you now investigate the room. It simply contains a pack of playing cards and 10 gold. Probably a gambling house of some sort. Whistling, you take both items and leave the building.

You make as if to leave but, as soon as you’re round the nearest tree, you drink all the sweet yellow liquid. When you can’t see your arms in front of you, you deduce that, either they’ve suddenly fallen off without you noticing, or that the invisibility potion’s worked. You approach the guard again. He’s playing patience and doesn’t notice you. You take the opportunity to make some obscene gestures as you walk past. As you head west towards the town, you vaguely wonder how come drinking a liquid makes your clothes invisible as well as your body. Congratulations, you complete the first part. Go you!

Having relayed the whole saga of your capture to the officer, he seems puzzled.
“Well,” he begins, “that checks out. Pretty common around this country. I suppose you aren’t a spy, at least.”
“Can you help me?”
“I’m terribly sorry but I’m afraid not, we have bigger issues. Half my men are trying to fight bandits while the other half are sitting on their arses and playing cards when they’re meant to be preparing for a possible invasion.
You’ll need to get to the town. It’s to the west. You’ll find a port and a busy market. Your friends shouldn’t be too far away. Oh, wait, didn’t I put a guard on the path? Nevermind. Anyhow, I must dash. Things to do…”

You are in a forest outside the hut that you slept in. It’s a gorgeous day outside; birds chirp, rabbits scurry about and everything’s perfect apart from the odd problem. Notably, you having no money or food in a foreign land, and your friends being captured. Nothing you can’t handle, mind. A path runs from west to east (or east to west, depending on how you look at it) while to your north and south lie thick forest.

The woods have begun to clear away and you find yourself in the midst of an army making camp. Fires are lit while people sit around drinking and eating. Soldiers eye you suspiciously and don’t appear eager to make contact. The land south of here is all grassland and is eerily deserted. Nearby is a square wooden building.

“It must be so dull being a guard all day,” you whisper in a smouldering voice, putting your face up to the guard’s and taking in a faint musky aroma, “I bet you never get to do anything fun. Wow,” you say as your stroke the man’s strong biceps, “How do you keep in such good shape?”
“I do the odd press up.” the guard mumbles.
“I can tell.” You whisper into the man’s ear, gently nibbling his earlobe while stroking the man’s chest.
You put your arms around the man’s back and bring your body into his so that you can feel every breath from his firm stomach. You caress the man’s lips with your own and open his mouth- gently teasing his tongue with little, flitting strokes. Your groin can suddenly feel the man’s excitement from the eagerness of his hard, throbbing… and then you realise that no-one wants to have the deviantART admins slap a ‘mature’ tag on this story so you have to rethink your strategy, despite you and the guard now being somewhat embarrassed.

“Oh, I’m terribly sorry for trying that.” You say
“Not a problem.” replies the guard. Catching him by surprise, you sprint past the guard and comfortably outrun him. Unfortunately, you can’t outrun the arrow that he fires at you. With your final thought, you consider the irony of the guard killing you for your own protection. You die.
